Every year thousands of British people buy a second home or make a permanent move abroad. Most head to Europe, attracted by the Mediterranean’s irresistible climate and lifestyle, the affordable coastal property and easy access from
the UK. Spain, France and Portugal are the UK’s favourite destinations, but Italy, Greece and Cyprus have strong appeal
too. Further afield, Florida is a popular vacation home destination, especially around Orlando.

Not everyone buying overseas wants to be in a beach resort. Some prefer to be inland, typically in a village or the countryside, where the way of life is less touristy and more rustic. For others, there is no better place to be than halfway
up a mountain!

This website exists to share the experiences of Brits starting a new life overseas or those who get enjoyment from owning
a holiday home. Our editor, Richard Way, is an international property journalist who has written about expats and overseas property-owners for more than two decades. His work has been published in various print and digital media. Now he wants to bring these real-life stories into one place, in the hope readers will feel inspired, pick up useful information but above all enjoy reading them.

One thing has become clear in recent years: even curveballs like the last financial crash, Brexit and Covid-19 can’t kill the dreams of Brits determined to own an overseas home. Sometimes plans have to be adapted or put on hold for a while,
but ultimately starting a new life or owning a bolt hole in the sun never loses its appeal.
